Enjoy the Silence
Verizon is coming tomorrow to set up my land line. Cablevision is coming next Tuesday to hook up broadband. Meanwhile, the PC in my roomate’s bedroom seems to be picking up a weak WiFi signal that is stable enough to use for work for a day or two.
Yesterday, my last day in the old “office,” I figured out how to use my Audiovox xv6600 as a USB modem. The transfer speeds were nothing short of impressive. I found a lot of instructions on how to adapt the telephone for this use, but none of them were terribly detailed or clear. Tomorrow (hopefully), I’ll go through my browser history and compile the resources that were most useful to me in coaxing modem behavior out of the cell, and I’ll write my own concise version of the step-by-steb process.
I’ve been carrying furniture, loading and driving big trucks, sweeping floors, tracking down missing hardware, and futzing with computers & telephones for about 4 days now. The new place has met with universal approval. If there is one major drawback, it is that we have to remember to be relatively quiet. The public hallway is a miraculously efficient echo chamber, and the other apartment in the building houses a baby and her parents. Another quirk is that every door to every bedroom has glass panes, which means that a large custom curtain order must be placed and filled before we have any privacy. Quirks and all, a recently renovated apartment in a historic building, with 3.5 bedrooms, a private backyard, all new wiring & appliances, high ceilings, and 2 bathrooms… that’s about all I could ask for right now. And the price is sooo right.
Work is more exciting than I would normally prefer, given how crazy/hectic my personal life is right now. Our biggest customer has just placed an order for a brand new app. Let the planning meetings begin. They’ve also asked us to integrate some of the Amazon product info feeds. It’s an exciting time, and I’m actually really looking forward to putting my nose to the grindstone.
I haven’t been posting much for the past few weeks. Hopefully, you’ve enjoyed the silence. Now that I’m settled in, you’ll definitely be hearing more from me.
