Why Rhapsody doesn’t work in Ubuntu

One day Rhapsody stopped working in Ubuntu on my work machine. It didn’t stop working on my home Ubuntu machine, which runs the same version. I thought something I did installing non-packaged software like the JRE and Flash caused it to stop working. At the time I couldn’t find any information by searching. Today I found this thread, in which someone casually mentions solving the problem by doing a killall esd and restarting Firefox. ESD, the Enlightened Sound Daemon, allows multiple programs to share the sound card. I wonder why it breaks the Rhapsody Firefox plugin. I also wonder why there is no problem on my home computer. A more reliable solution seems to be disabling the software sound mixing under System… Preferences… Sound, although the player still seems to struggle.
