Geek Night
Yesterday was the second fortnightly Geek Night at my house. Geek Night is gathering of computer geeks. So far, I’ve been inviting anyone I know who spends any decent portion of their time at the command line, coding, or watching tail like it’s prime-time television. In the future, I think I’m going to extend the invitation to more folks on the creative side of the software world: product developers, interaction designers, graphic designers, etc. That will just have to wait for a bigger venue.
At Geek Night #1, Dave S. brought his Mac with a version of the Sugar OS running in parallels, which he demoed for all. At Geek Night #2, Harlan set up a screen and showed us two episodes of The IT Crowd, a close-to-home BBC sitcom. Both times, I think everyone had a lot of fun. Nerds from 4 different companies have joined us so far, and I’m hoping some friendships will spring up as a result of the gathering. Folks also seemed to be passing laptops and storage drives around… who knows what they did with them.
Normally, Geek Night doesn’t have much of an agenda - the people who show up have already proven that they can come up with great things to do without me specifying a curriculum. However, the next Geek Night, February 15th, we’re going to watch Grandma’s Boy on Sam’s oversized screen. If you haven’t seen Grandma’s Boy, I consider it a must-see for nerds and geeks of the self-professed and in-denial varieties.
If you’re interested in attending Geek Night, drop me a line.

Hey, that’s a great idea! I’ve been trying to get something similar going where I live too, but alas I know no geeks :-(. I’m working on a site for command line junkies. It’ll mainly be a WP powered site that’ll serve as a repository of cli tricks and such. If you’re interested in contributing, please let me know.
